On 7 November 2018, with funding support from the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA), Dr Nengye Liu organized the Workshop “Exploring Australia’s China Strategy in Antarctic Governance” at Adelaide Law School. The Workshop gathered a group of distinguished Chinese and Australian scholars and policy makers to discuss Australia-China relations in Antarctica. Speakers and discussants include Prof YANG Jian (Vice President, Shanghai Institute of International Affairs), Prof Julia Guifang Xue (Koguan Chair Professor of the Law of the Sea, Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Prof Shirley Scott (Head of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW Canberra), Dr Tony Press (former Director of Australian Antarctic Division), Mr Charlton Clark (General Manager of the Strategies Branch at the Australian Antarctic Division), Dr Jeffery McGee (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Tasmania), Dr Daniel Bray (Senior Lecturer in Politics, La Trobe University) and Mr Philip Kimpton (Director of Sea Law and Antarctica Section, DFAT). Furthermore, a group of Adelaide law students were invited to observe this high-level meeting.

The Workshop is the only project funded by AIIA’s Workshop Support Grant 2018 and was held just ahead of Australia-China Antarctic Talk in Beijing this year. Through candid and thorough dialogue, it is expected to enhance Australia-China Antarctic cooperation, which is perhaps one of most important issues for Australia-China bilateral relations in the next 30 years. Several resulting publications will be coming soon.
