Dr Nengye Liu, together with a group of prominent academics in the country: Prof Marcus Haward (University of Tasmania), Dr Jeffery McGee (University of Tasmania), Prof Tim Stephens (ARC Future Fellow, University of Sydney), Prof Shirley Scott (UNSW Canberra) and Dr Tony Press (University of Tasmania), recently succeed in the Australian Research Council’s latest funding round.

The project “Geopolitical Change and the Antarctic Treaty System” is among 11 Discovery Projects awarded nationwide in the field of law and legal studies, with total funding of $466,000 from the ARC for the next three years (2019-2021). This project aims to analyse current and emerging geopolitical tensions within the Antarctic Treaty System and draw lessons on successful management of these geopolitical tensions. In doing so, the project intends to address a key focus of the Australian Government’s Antarctic 20 Year Strategy and Action Plan, maintaining Australia’s influence in Antarctica.

The project will be administered by the University of Tasmania and supported by an international advisory panel of world-leading scholars:  Prof Oran Young (Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Univeristy of California Santa Barbara, United States), Prof Sanjay Chaturvedi (South Asian University, India), Prof Silja Voeneky (University of Freiburg, Germany) and Emeritus Prof Tom Griffiths (W.K. Hancock Professor of History, ANU).
