Adelaide Law School senior lecturer Dr Matthew Stubbs has been appointed to the Law Council of Australia’s newly-formed National Human Rights Committee.
The Law Council of Australia is the peak national representative body of the Australian legal profession, and represents about 60,000 legal practitioners nationwide. The National Human Rights Committee has been formed to provide high-level advice to the Law Council of Australia on the domestic implementation of Australia’s key human rights obligations. Dr Stubbs’ research and teaching interests include human rights law in Australia and internationally, and his professional engagements include serving as Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of South Australia. Dr Stubbs is also currently a participant in a national human rights teaching project funded by a $220,000 competitive Innovation and Development Grant from the Commonwealth’s Office for Learning and Teaching.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr Stubbs said “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to contribute in a small way to maintaining the Law Council’s wonderful record of engagement in professional and public debates about critical contemporary human rights issues in Australia.”
Acting Dean of Law, Associate Professor Melissa de Zwart, said “This latest appointment to a Law Council committee is indicative of how Adelaide Law School academics engage with the legal profession and contribute to policy debates on the national stage.”
