Dr David Plater, the Deputy Director of the South Australian Law Reform Institute based at the Adelaide University Law School visited the Chinese National Police University in Beijing from 18 to 24 November 2018.
China is a civil law system and the Chinese National Police University in Beijing is the leading institution of its kind in China and future police officers, prosecutors, civil servants and judicial officers study there.
Dr Plater had the opportunity during his visit to Beijing to meet and speak to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academics and defence lawyers about law reform and the role and work of the SA Law Reform Institute as well as topical policing and prosecution issues of mutual concern as family violence and the implications of modern cyber-crimes as online child exploitation material and revenge porn. There was also time to see such amazing sights as the Forbidden City.
A major aspect of modern law reform (as with legal education and research) is comparative in nature. Thanks to all involved for such a fascinating trip.
