On 29 November 2018, the independent South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI) based at the Adelaide University Law School took part in an all party briefing at Parliament House for MPs on SALRI’s recent Report, ‘Surrogacy: A Legislative Framework: A review of Part 2B of the Family Relationships Act 1975 (SA)’.
Professor John Williams (SALRI Director), Dr David Plater (SALRI Deputy Director), Ms Madeleine Thompson (former Law Reform student and SALRI researcher and Report co-author) and Ms Anita Brunacci (family lawyer and Report co-author) were introduced by the Hon John Dawkins MLC to conduct the all party briefing for MPs on SALRI’s Report and its findings.
The Report, publicly released on 15 November 2018, makes 69 recommendations for an improved non-commercial system of surrogacy in South Australia.
The Attorney-General, the Hon Vickie Chapman MP, has expressed her support for SALRI’s work and has welcomed the Report and tabled a draft Surrogacy Bill reflecting SALRI’s recommendations in Parliament on 15 November 2018.
The State Government is now inviting feedback on both SALRI’s Report and the draft Bill via the Government’s YourSAy website (https://yoursay.sa.gov.au/decisions/draft-surrogacy-bill-2018/about )
