Adelaide Law Schools’ ROCIT (Regulation of Corporations Insolvency and Taxation) Research Unit (Associate Professor David Brown), co-convened, with the Ross Parsons Centre, University of Sydney (Professors Sheelagh McCracken and Jason Harris), a Personal Property Securities Law Roundtable in Sydney on Friday 8 November.
The Personal Property Securities Roundtable held on 8 November 2019 at University of Sydney’s City Campus was jointly convened by ROCIT and the Ross Parsons Centre, University of Sydney. Three panel sessions focused respectively on Current Problems in PPS Law, with papers presented by Steve Flynn, Special Counsel at Simpson Grierson, Wellington, New Zealand on the case of Hamersley v Forge; Associate Professor David Brown of Adelaide Law School, on Purchase Money Security Interests and Refinancing, and Professor Jason Harris of University of Sydney, on s588FL of the Corporations Act and Restructuring. The invited audience were leading specialists in this complex field drawn from academia, the judiciary, government, legal and accounting practice, and the banking and finance sector.
Associate Professor Brown said that it was a rare, if not unique, opportunity for participants working in this complex area, a relatively new one in Australia, to debate conceptual issues and commercial impacts of the Personal Property Securities Act in depth with people who have a high familiarity and interest in this legislation, including those with overseas experience of very similar regimes. It was also a pleasure for ROCIT to have its first collaboration with the University of Sydney/Ross Parsons Centre, and this enabled the event to be hosted in Sydney, where most of the participants were based.
